THIS IS MARRIAGE!!
Das right!
Permission to be a bad ass nod.
He looks back at the guy like, “SEE THAT? SHE SAID YES. YOU’RE SO FUCKED.”
this gifset has always made me smile because it kind of inadvertently shows the balance of power between men and women in Sparta
Sparta was ahead of its time when looking at the rights its women had, especially if you compared it to its counterpart, Athens. Even though Athens was the center of democracy, women were treated like shit. They were pretty much on the same level as slaves and servants. They weren’t allowed outside and they weren’t taught to read or write. They were there to have children and raise them, pretty much.
In Sparta, women were taught to read and write, to defend them selves, and to run households while their husbands were gone. They were allowed to govern (sans the highest positions of the oligarchy) and take the jobs men used to have if they’d gone off to war. Spartan women could have their own money, land and even their own slaves. Women were not seen as things only for procreation. Men and Women were, for the most part, equal beings. Marriage was for procreation and honestly, fidelity was not as important in Spartan culture as it was in Athenian culture. Husband suddenly vanished, or was gone too long during a war? Girl go find yourself another husband. It’s all good. And raising kids? Who raised kids? Nurses raised kids, while their mothers were allowed to go off and do the things their husbands were allowed to do.
so damn right he needed his wife’s approval.
squeaks really loudly
I have so much love for the Spartans you don’t even know
